Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineer – Research & Development – Idaho Falls
Sentient Corporation is a technology leader in statistical and physics based product life prediction (prognostics) for military, aerospace, renewable energy and industrial machinery. We develop software simulation tools and physics-based models that enable new engineering design and field maintenance paradigms which lower the cost of fielding high dollar, rotating equipment such as helicopters, jet fighters and wind turbines. Sentient has enjoyed steady revenue growth and profitability since inception in 2001. Sentient currently has 17 employees; our team primarily consists of scientists and engineers, including 5 Ph.D. and 3 M.S. holders. Our corporate headquarters are in Idaho Falls, ID, with remote employees in Vermont, New York, and Tennessee.

The successful applicant will research material failure modes and characteristics via simulation and experimentation, identify and implement better ways of detecting and predicting fatigue failure, and develop innovative approaches for maximizing the value of machine condition information. Other responsibilities will include creating compelling technical proposals to help secure new projects and outreach activities such as professional networking, forming partnerships with government and academic counterparts, publishing papers, and establishing credibility and good rapport with customer technical reps. Occasional travel will be required.

This position will be filled as soon as possible.

A successful candidate will have most or all of these skills:
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering
  • Detailed modeling experience with mechanical systems
  • Experience in FE/FD methods (LS-DYNA a plus)
  • Experience with fatigue of high strength steel
  • Advanced Matlab/Simulink skills
  • Experience (C, C++, FORTRAN, etc.)
  • Superb written and oral communication ability
  • Hands-on laboratory experience
